Falling Short has been together since 2001, when the original members, being Reinard Steyn (Lead vocals and guitar), Francois Booyse (Bass and backing vocals), Tyrone Swinton (Lead guitar and backing vocals), and Tyrone McDonald (Drums), were still at school. In 2003, Tyrone McDonald was replaced by Kyle Meidlinger as the new drummer. In 2006, Reinard was replaced as guitarist by Juan el Gato. Reinard now only does Lead Vocals.
Falling Short’ s influences are extremely eclectic, being anything such as Black Sabbath, Audioslave, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Iron Maiden, 36 Crazy Fists, Man o’ War, Rufio, Seether, Nirvana, Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Trust Company, BB King, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, American Head Charge, Killswitch Engage,Yngwe Malmsteen, Eric Clapton, Bush, The Doors, Ill Nino, Breaking Benjamin, Bob Dylan, Atreyu, My Chemical Romance, even some Hip-Hop and House, and a host of South African bands. Considering all these influences, Falling Short’ s sound isn’ t easily described, however the media have dubbed it as “Melodic Nu-Metal with Alternative twist”.
Equipment wise, Reinard uses either a Shure SM58, or a Shure 55SH. Tyrone plays a PRS Standard 22 in camo burst, or a J&D Custom through an Ibanez ToneBlaster 100 watt 4x12 Halfstack, with a Radial Tonebone, and a Boss OS2. Juan uses a Gibson SG in white, or a Gibson Les Paul Studio in ebony through an Orange head, and 1960 style Marshall 4x12 cab, with a myriad of effects, including a Jim Dunlop Crybaby Wah, and a Mesa/Boogie Valve Overdrive. Francois plays a Samick 4string bass in metallic grey with white stars, or a Washburn 5string bass in piano black, through a Fender Rumble 100watt combo. Kyle uses a DW Pacific drumkit, with 4 toms, a Tama Star Classic Snare, Pearl Hardware and Zildjan and Paiste cymbals.
The band has chosen to stay independent, with Ian Swinton of Swinton Records being the sole beneficiary, providing the band with the necessary help to produce two albums. The band will consider a record contract if the right offer comes along. Ian has however, recently taken the decision upon himself to release the band financially, in order to hold their own with all the best. Bowline Distribution currently does the distribution of their debut album, “Feel Free to Complain”, and will continue the distribution of their new release, “Three Little Words”. The band is planning a countrywide tour in the near future to promote the new album, and are aspiring to play festivals such as Woodstock and Oppikoppi this year.
In 2006, Falling Short aquired a very valuable asset to their arsenal… Their new manager, Bianca Le Cornu a.k.a. “Bo”, or “The Scowne”. Bianca has been most beneficial to the rise of Falling Short, booking gigs for the band, and doing the general dirty-work. Bianca organized for the band to play at the annual Amphi Desert Party held every New Year’ s eve in the Namibian Desert. This gig ranks as one of Falling Short’ s best all time gigs, but it competes strongly with others, such as The RP Studio’ s / Emerging Sounds Finals in 2005 at the Theatre of Marcellus in Emperor’ s Palace, the Rockstar Lottery exclusive gig with Wickhead, Starseed (UK) and Holly & The Woods in 2006, or the Medium2Rare rOcktober warefare in 2006, which the band won.
Falling Short has gotten numerous reviews and interviews in magazines and newspapers including Truth Magazine, Music Maker Magazine, MK89.co.za, and the SA Music publication. Falling Short got the nod to compose and perform the theme song to MK89’ s “Mullets” television show in 2006, and also currently have a music video of their single “Free” on MK89. They are also playlisted on many radio staions across South Africa, including TUKSfm, RadioPUK, MATIESfm, and Jacaranda. With the release of their new album, they will be playlisted more extensively. The band has been very actively involved in the Rockstar Lottery, achieving a number one spot in the competition numerous times.
Falling Short are all about making music, and having fun doing it. Falling Short are about the fans. Falling Short are about Rock ‘n Roll! So if you are in the mood for a seriously good time, jump on the Falling Short bus!!! ROCK ON!
