MotherFUDD - The Gathering 2010

MotherFUDD - The Gathering 2010

MotherFUDD, South Africa's renowned metal festival is proud to announce that they will be hosting the first ever Official Guinness World Record for the “Most People Headbanging Simultaneously” at the seventh annual MotherFUDD – The Gathering 2010 on 13 March 2010.

Motherfudd is extremely proud to fly this exciting and unusual flag as it will not only spotlight the massive following metal music and has in this country but also that this epic event will take place on South African soil.

The bands under Mother's care this year are: Agro, All Forlorn, Architecture of Aggression, Bile of Man, Chromium, Emperium, Erebus, Fragmented Children, Haggis & Bong, Instrametal, Juggernaught, Loathe, Mazaru, Nighthawk, Reverend Henry Kane, Red Helen, Riddare av Koden, Rhütz, Sacrifist, Sathern and Stigmata Dawn.

Tickets are R220 for the entire weekend and are available from www.webtickets.co.za. This includes weekend-long parking, camping, lots of drunken arm-in-arm metal camaraderie, the best South African metal bands and your name down in the history books!

For added mojo there are game drives, Bubble-ball, skating and bmxing, swimming, lots of food and flea stalls, a tuck shop and a huge, well-priced bar with DJs that will be satisfying FUDDers' metal appetites well into the early hours.

On a serious note:
Because of the heightened media interest this year we had to put certain criteria in place and thus have RESTRICTED ENTRY to 1500 tickets only. NO GATE SALES and NO EXCEPTIONS. It's best to avoid disappointment, a copious amount of egg on your face and your buddies' endless ragging by buying your tickets through Webtickets early, as they will also close automatically as soon as the limit is reached.

MotherFUDD would not be possible without our like-minded partners in crime: Monster Energy Drink, Aqua Seltzer, Headbang Today, Revolution, Killer Truck Co, Locally Whipped Magazine, Midrand Stereo, Maganstarr Productions, EA Games, Star Gazers Extra Mural Centre, The Cameraman, Viking Records, Sound Decision, Synergy Productions, Music Connection and Schecter Guitar Research.

MotherFUDD – The Gathering is the brainchild of Yvonne Pennicott, long-time band manager and festival extraordinaire who inspired a gathering of the best musical talent in the country to bring about a 2-day camp-over festival showcasing the pick of the crop. 2010 sees MotherFUDD hosted from 12 – 14 March 2010 at the acclaimed Malonjeni Guest Resort just south of Johannesburg.

Hog Hoggidy Hog Helloween

Hog Hoggidy Hog Helloween

The next couple of shows we have lined up have us taking a trot down memory lane. Sprinboks (formerly Springfield) is where 14 years ago a much younger and drunker version of the Hogs first decided to make the band official. Then we'll be playing a show at the venue that hasn't had really had much live band action for a while, but anyone in the music scene a few years back will tell you that this place was an institution. Not only this but it is also the venue that we played our first show ever also around 14 years ago. In the spirit of all this nostalgia, we will be attempting to bring back a couple of old songs every now and then too. Synergy Live festival... well I don't really have any cool old stories (that I can mention) but it's going to be awesome nonetheless.

HALLOWEEN WITH ROCK OUT RADIO, THE HOGS AND FRIENDS

It’s old hallow’s eve again, the time of year where folks up in the northwestern parts of the world dress up in funny costumes and go around door-to-door begging for handouts. Living in South Africa, this is pretty much an everyday occurrence already, so we generally don’t feel the urge to take part in Halloween. At the same time in Cape Town summer, it’s any excuse for a good time so in conjuction with Rock Out Radio, we're throwing a party anyway. Check the end of the mail for details.

THE TURTLE STRIKES BACK!

It was a cold winter’s night at the Purple Turtle back in August 1995. This was where it all started, where Hog Hoggidy Hog had their first show ever. We’d only been together for about 2 months and we only had 3 origninal songs and 2 covers. Since then the Purple Turtle has had countless shows and everyone who was there has at least a good couple of Turtle stories to share. The venue hasn’t really been having much live action lately, but that’s all set to change now because the Turtle is back! All bands performing on the night were involved in the turtle scene so join us for a night of memories and mayhem and let's party like it was the good old days. We’ve obviously acquired a few more songs over the last 14 years and we’ll be bringing back an oldie or two just for this occasion.

SYNERGY FESTIVAL

Although the Western Cape has the beach and the mountain (and the south-easter), the one thing that is a bit lacking is the amount of decent festivals. Well at least festivals with a half decent line-up anyway. I could go on and on about how cool this festival is going to be, but just do yourself a favour and go to their website and check out the line-up for yourself.

METHOD TO THE MADNESS AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE!

Due to numerous requests from our fans abroad, we have finally been able to make our music available worldwide through www.oneworld.co.za. You will be able to safely and securely order both the Method to the Madness and the Oink albums online and have them delivered to you anywhere in the world. South Africans should be able to get the Cd in your favourite local music store, but if you're too lazy to get out of the house, you are more than welcome to order it too.

THE MUSIC VIDEO - FINALLY!!!

After about as much procrastination and deliberation as you've come to expect from the Hogs, the Sherry Ann music video is just about finished. I've seen some of the stuff already and I promise you that it's going to be a **** hot video. In the next newsletter along with a bit more information, screen shots etc, we will be eventually be announcing the actual release date. So keep watching that inbox.

T-T-T-that's all folks!!!!

SacriFist Road Repport

SacriFist Road Repport

Greetings from the SacriFist camp.

Lets jump straight into the thick of things. After about 25000km’s and visiting 6 countries in four weeks, the SacriFist boys are glad to back gigging on home ground. There are no better fans than the ones that have stuck around and supported us here in SA for all these years! Thank you all so very much!

Having said that the tour was a great success and plenty of fun. And the beer,… hmmm, there was inconceivable amounts of that going around. From a business point of view, before our return back to SA we had managed to confirm 8 more shows, radio and TV interviews, agents and support crew, marketing and advertising companies,… all for our next tour to Germany, so exciting things are happening at a very fast pace indeed. At this stage we are still in the planning stages, but we will keep you all informed of proceedings.

Now who of the drummers out there have checked out the new Zildjian Z3 range of cymbals? If not you are missing out indeed! Michael gave them a test run on tour and without a doubt they stood up to the name that stands for excellence! Power, projection and playability is what you get from these quality cymbals. check them out at http://www.zildjian.com/z3

“After 25 years of drumming, there is only one cymbal that I will ever play, and that is Zildjian.” - Michael

Then on a very personal and sad note, after many years with the band, hundreds of shows, thousands of shooters, Byron has had to resign from the band. Lets not go into details, but we can say he is still our brother and we respect his decision. After all, ones health is not something you mess around with!

On that note, the show must go on so we are on the hunt for a lead guitarist. So whoever you are and you feel you would like to give it a shot, send an email with your contact details to info@sacrifist.com and lets take it from there. We would like to hear from as many people as possible, so even if you think you might not fit in, give it a shot, you have nothing to loose.

Looking for Merchandise: www.sacrifist.com and follow the online store link – delivery worldwide!

That’s it for now.

Until next time – keep it metal

Pedal to the Metal

Pedal to the Metal

Pedal to the Metal is a concert that is about enjoying Metal Music brought to you by RockingSA and if you missed the first one, make sure you don’t miss Pedal to the Metal 2. Pedal to the metal 2 is turning out to be one of the biggest shows happening at Zeplins Rock Shack Wonderboom with 9 bands and Pestroy being the head liner for the event.

Pestroy’s the drug that makes you wanna get the **** up. Pestroy have been spreading the word and fighting the good fight for eleven years now, and remain one of the main pillars in the South African alternative music scene and “Kings of the Underground”.

In a country starved of international attention, particularly in the alternative music genre, Pestroy have stepped up to the plate and have become the de-facto flag bearers of the home grown scene, giving local fans something to hang their hat on.

They’ve toured the entire country numerous times and have played just about every conceivable venue in South Africa. They have performed alongside international acts such as Pennywise (US), Blindside (US), Haste The Day (US), Entombed (US), Gyroscope (Australia), Spermbirds (Australia), Seether (US) and DJ Dieselboy (US). Pestroy are also regulars on the local drum & bass scene and are often asked to perform with international DJ’s as “no other band gets the party started like Pestroy does”.

It's total entropy at a Pestroy gig. Their live performance has become legendary. Pestroy’s stage presence, razor sharp sound and airtight technical prowess make them an event-organizers dream, or nightmare if you’re trying to maintain a calm silence - At Woodstock 2003, police shut down their set for creating too much of a ruckus and they have been shut down a few shows since.

Pestroy are proudly endorsed by Music Connection, Kevins Kustom Tattoos, Pearl Drums, Jagermeister and Iron Fist.

Pestroy are a band of the highest caliber. Their dedication, devotion, passion and awesome power are mind blowing. They should name a bomb after this band.

The 2nd main act for Pedal to the metal 2 is Prevail.

Prevail is a band that has been rocking the Gauteng scene for years now and at each show the crowds go wild with there fist in the air screaming for more and the occasional all hail Prevail. Prevail is a band that is somewhere between a rock and a hard (metal) place. What I mean by this is that by infusing their talents they will leave you in awe of their solid performance, which will stick in your mind long after the show is over. It is an amazing experience to see so many people get off their asses and go wild, with heads and bodies bobbing, every time Prevail performs yet another climactic set. You sometimes have to pinch yourself, just to make sure you’re not dreaming.

Pedal to the metal 2 line up also Includes Their Death Becomes Her!  A new band consisting of some pretty insane musicians and former members of The Dead Will Tell, Underbelly, Final Solution and some nobody called Doug.

Their Death Becomes Her  is a blend of all the musical styles that the band listens to, ranging from soft, melodic interludes to inspirational, upbeat, hardcore rhythms to the chaotic brutality of modern death metal and grindcore. The music represents the feeling of confusion, chaos and turbulent emotion present in everyday life. The lyrics, while brutal at times, are heartfelt and meaningful; each song tells a personal story and deals with the tragedy and betrayal endured on a daily basis. The other bands that featured in Pedal to the Metal 2 will make sure this is an event that you will be telling your grand children about is Black Era, Melusha, Menorah, Twelve, Hemridge and Symphalt.

Pedal to the Metal 2 will be happening on Saturday the 21st of November and the cover is R40 that is a staggering R5 per band. Zeplins Rock Shack Wonderboom is located in the Wonderwaters Centre, Annlin, on the Cnr Braam Pretorius and Lavender West. For more info go to www.rockingsa.com

Line Up:

15:30 – 16:00 Symphalt

16:20 – 16:50 Menorah

17:10 - 17:40 Melusha

18:00 – 18:30 Hemridge

18:50 – 19:20 Twelve

19:40 – 20:25 Black Era

20:45 – 21:30 Their Death Becomes Her

21:50 – 22:35 Prevail

22:55 – 23:40 Pestroy

SA Horrorfest Film Festival 2009

SA Horrorfest Film Festival 2009

For its half decade anniversary, HORRORFEST V is set to yet again prove its place as the most exciting and diverse Halloween-season event on the continent.

Across 29 October - 6 November at the legendary Labia Theatre (Orange Str., Cape Town), expect a myriad of rare-, classic- & indie movies, plus (over 6 hours of) short films (across 3 collections) on the big screen; special pre-release screenings of 2 new cinematic releases; Halloween dress-up; a live soundtrack performed to the screening of a silent horror/chiller by THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE (consisting of members from TERMINATRYX,  LARK and other talented special guests), a new literary addition; and of course cool prizes & give-aways (including a sizable production prize for the best locally produced short flick).

HORROFEST V Special Guest:

Unfortunately due to pre-production work on his current project, the months of planning and co-ordinating to get AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON director John Landis to attend the festival with his classic film did not work out.  The movie will still be screened, but we are awaiting word from his publicists on the chances of a Skye link-up with him after the screening of American Werewolf on Sunday 1 November.
Our thanks go out to The Townhouse Hotel & Conference Centre and Virgin Air for their assistance.

The Movies:

Since its genesis, the HORRORFEST has screened a wide range of chilling movies from around the globe including the USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Finland, Spain, Canada, Pakistan, Italy etc., with everything from vampires and zombies, to ghosts, aliens and madmen.  While not limited to this theme, the 2009 HORRORFEST is set to be the year of the Werewolf!

So what better time to screen the genre-defining AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON !  In addition its brand new feature length retrospective documentary BEWARE THE MOON will also be screened.  It features great interviews with all the major cast & crew (incl. director John Landis and special make-up FX artist Rick Baker), and revisits many of the key locations.

The HorrorFest continues its tradition of giving cinefans the opportunity to see exciting movies on the big screen, with many rare ones which may not even reach South African video stores, now or in the future.

The full line-up includes:

> PANDORUM - the sneak preview of this Sci-Fi/Horror movie (starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster) will open the festival, with HORRORFEST attendees getting to see this outerspace chiller before the rest of the country.
> The festival will close with another pre-release screening - ZOMBIELAND, starring Woody Harrelson (arrive like a zombie and win cool stuff).
> STRIGOI, a phenomenal take on the vampire myth, shot in Romania where many of these beliefs still run very strong.  (Toronto After Dark winner).
> T.M.A. - The Mystery Address, an amazingly atmospheric piece with an artist returning to his childhood home where the dark and lethal secrets literally boil to the surface.  These two movies were also shot on 35mm as opposed to the current much preferred and more affordable HD format.
> COLIN is an innovative zombie movie from the UK with an interesting twist - it is seen from the zombie's perspective! (2009 Raindance winner).
> BIKINI GIRLS ON ICE throws together two key ingredients of the classic slasher film, girls and a madman!
>The highly unlikely sport of cricket is the focal point of the revenge killer spoof I KNOW HOW MANY RUNS YOU SCORED LAST SUMMER (features Miss Nude Australia Arianna Starr in a cameo).
> THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE is an shockingly original and disturbing take on the demented doctor theme. (Stars German superstar Dieter Laser.
> The SHADOW REALM Short Film Collection will again feature an amazing array from here and abroad, across 3 feature length chapters.
> This year's live soundtrack performance to a silent classic will be for the 1925 Italian underworld epic, MACISTE IN HELL (Maciste all'inferno), performed by members of TERMINATRYX and LARK, now accumulatively known as THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE.
> DIE-NER (get-it?) is a horror-comedy of errors.  When a killer makes a diner his new slaying ground, he is faced with the dilemma of his victims refusing to stay dead!  Features South African born actress Maria Olsen.
> WICKED WORLD will have its world premier at HORRORFEST V.  Shot on 16mm, this movie started its journey in the 1990s & was completed just before the festival.
> FAMILY DEMONS sees an abused teenager murdering her alcoholic mother, but the parent’s vengeful spirit returns to haunt her.
> THE BLOOD APE represents the grindhouse-underground-trash contingent, celebrating ‘70s exploitation in all its gory glory as an escaped ape wreaks havoc.
> THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (First Sequence) - This shocking and highly original movie depicts a demented surgeon’s psychotic plan to realize his unspeakable creation.  Prepare yourself! Starring German superstar Dieter Laser.
> In WEREWOLF OF WASHINGTON a reporter is sent to Hungary where he’s bitten by a werewolf... he also happens to be having an affair with the U.S. President’s daughter!
> BLOOD NIGHT: The Legend Of Mary Hachet - A haunting urban legend materializes with a group of teenagers celebrating a bloody anniversary.  Stars Bill Moseley (from The Devil's Rejects) & is the 2009 Shockerfest winner.
> THE WEREWOLF WOMAN is said to be based on "a true story so brutal and horrifying it was kept from the public for over a century!"

Screening times will be released shortly (posted first at www.HORRORFEST.info, & will incl. more extensive movie info).

The Short Film Competition:

Since the creation of the S.A. HorrorFest, the short film section has been an integral part, the organizers adamant to encourage and nurture genre movie making, especially on local soil. The original collection of short movies in 2005 grew from 70 minutes to the mammoth 6hrs+ (across three feature film length collections) in 2008!

Having been with us since 2006, the generous folks at VISUAL IMPACT and HDhub is again on board with a great HD production prize for a week's shoot & edit including camera, lighting and a MacBook with Final Cut Pro.

The best foreign short film will also be announced (and awarded with an official South African HORRORFEST certificate).  Various top categories (for both short- and feature films screened at the festival) will also be selected.

An additional prize has been added! Something Wicked Magazine is putting up R1000 cash for the best locally written short film screenplay.

On Halloween night, Paul and Sonja from TERMINATRYX will again be joined on stage by Simon and Sean from LARK (to create a diverse, vibrant and exciting new soundtrack, performing it live to the movie's screening. This musical collaboration will now be known as THE MAKABRA ENSEMBLE, and will also feature additional musical talents Max Starcke and Lara Block.

(eligible winners must be present at the ZOMBIELAND screening on 6 November to claim their prize).
Some of these titles will include AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, DRAG ME TO HELL, FINAL DESTINATION box sets, NOSFERATU, PULSE, TWILIGHT, THE DESCENT (autographed by cast & crew), DEATH PROOF, PLANET TERROR, THE UNBORN, KEEPER OF SOULS, THE UNINVITED, GRUDGE 3, LIVE FEED, CULT, RESIDENT EVIL: Apocalypse, SATAN'S LITTLE HELPER, THE ZODIAC, ED GEIN, ZOMBIE HONEYMOON (autographed by its lead actress), BOOK OF BLOOD, and many more.

The HORRORFEST Finally Hits The Rest of South Africa!:

2009 also saw the HorrorFest reaching the Northern parts of South Africa for the first time on 8 August, in the shape of the live original soundtrack performance (by members of Terminatryx, Lark and Dawn Treader) to the screening of the classic silent vampire movie NOSFERATU, at this year's OPPI KOPPI, the country's biggest music festival! - www.TERMINATRYX.com/nosferatu.htm
This is slowly paving the way to get this unique festival to other parts of the country.
